Mechanic Shop Fire in The Denver Harbor / Port Houston Area

WHAT: Mechanic shop fire.

WHEN: September 23, 2024, at 11:05 a.m.

WHERE: 2215 McCarty St. 77029.

INJURIES: No reported injuries.

PROPERTY SAVED: $400,000 in estimated property / content saved.

DAMAGE: $300,000 in estimated property / content damage.

CAUSE: Unintentional (heat source too close to combustible).

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Firefighters arrived on scene to find heavy smoke and fire coming from a mechanic shop. They made an offensive attack and protected the nearby exposures. The business owner confirmed that everyone safely made it out of the building. Additional HFD units were requested due to the size of the structure, fire conditions and hot weather conditions. HFD Hazardous Materials took samples of the run-off and monitored the air quality. Crews rotated through Rehab and extinguished the fire. An employee of the mechanic shop was using a torch when nearby rags accidentally caught fire and spread. 50 personnel responded to this incident, including firefighters from Stations 20, 23, 45, 17, 18, 27, 41, 42, 71, Hazmat 22 and Rehab 8.
