Mayor Sylvester Turner sent a letter today to Patrick “Marty” Lancton, president of the firefighters’ union, about the city’s proposal to phase in the costs of Prop B over five years without laying off firefighters and municipal workers.
Layoffs are necessary with the immediate implementation of Prop B, which included no funding mechanism while it granted raises of 29 percent on average to firefighters.
Voters approved the proposition in November.
Without a negotiated agreement on a phase-in, the city began immediate implementation of Prop B this month as detailed here.
