March 4, 2021 -- Mayor Sylvester Turner and the Mayor's Health Equity Response (H.E.R.) Task Force partnered with the Ismaili Council of Southwestern United States and the Greater Houston Retailers Cooperative Association today for a food and water distribution.
Volunteers provided more than one-thousand hot meals and cases of water to Fourth Ward residents living at the Historic Oaks of Allen Parkway Village, which is owned and operated by the Houston Housing Authority.
While the event was planned as a walk-up distribution for residents, volunteers went door-to-door to deliver meals to some of the seniors living in the 540-unit complex.
Burns Original BBQ, a Houston Eats Restaurant Support (H.E.R.S.) Program vendor, prepared and delivered the hot meals. An additional food donation was provided by Baked by Beena. The Greater Houston Retailers Cooperative Association donated the cases of water and the H.E.R. Task Force handed out face masks to protect individuals during the pandemic.
"Houstonians have been dealing with the pandemic for nearly a year now, and just three weeks ago, they endured one of the worst winter storms in our region," said Mayor Sylvester Turner. "I want to give a big thank you to the Ismaili community for once again stepping up for our City in a moment of crisis. The Ismaili Council of Southwestern United States and all of the other organizations who partnered with the H.E.R. Taskforce today are the reason I am proud to be Mayor of this resilient City."
The Historic Oaks of Allen Parkway Village is located in District C, which is represented by Council Member Abbie Kamin.
“Time and time again the Ismaili community has stepped up to help those in need in our city and around the world," said Council Member Kamin. "The spirit of giving back is in everything that our friends in the Ismaili community do – from efforts like today to the new Ismaili Center in District C which will be a welcoming place for all Houstonians for years to come. I also thank Mayor Turner for continuing to lead the City through this emergency and ensuring that no resident is left behind.”
