Mayor Sylvester Turner is extending the deadline to Friday, March 30, for youth to complete applications for jobs with private sector employers and non-profits through the Hire Houston Youth summer internship program. Accepted applicants 16 to 24 years old will be paid an hourly wage of $8. In 2017, the city helped place 5,000 young people in summer jobs. This year, the city's goal is 7,500 job opportunities.
Young people can apply online now until March 30 at www.hirehoustonyouth.org.
"Summer employment provides young people with an opportunity to gain workforce readiness skills, engages them in positive activities during the summer, and links them to long-term career opportunities." said Mayor Turner. "An able and ready workforce is also critical to ensuring a robust economic future for our city. I am committed to providing summer jobs for our young people who live in the city and thank our corporate partners for continuing to work with the City of Houston to Hire Houston's Youth!”
This is the third year for the HHY program. Over 200 companies participated and 5,238 job opportunities were offered in 2017. More than 50 percent of the job candidates had no prior work experience and 50 percent had annual household income of less than $22,000.
Employers can still partner with Mayor Turner's Hire Houston Youth initiative by signing up online at www.hirehoustonyouth.org. If an employer cannot hire directly, it can provide a young person with an opportunity at a local nonprofit organization with a tax-deductible pledge of $2,500.
