September 20, 2021 -- The Houston Police Department (HPD) announced the shooting of two HPD officers today. Senior Police Officer William "Bill" Jeffrey, 54, and Sergeant Michael Vance, 49, were shot this morning while serving a felony warrant in Harris County. Sadly, HPD Senior Officer Jeffery was pronounced dead shortly after the shooting. Sergeant Vance remains in stable condition at a Houston hospital.
Mayor Sylvester Turner issued the following statement:
“Today is a tragic day for the City of Houston. The senseless shooting of two Houston Police Officers while serving a narcotics warrant in Harris County reminds us that police work is inherently dangerous.
“HPD Senior Officer William “Bill” Jeffrey was an exemplary protector of the people of our City. He dedicated 31 years of his life to the Houston Police Department. Today, he died a hero. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Suzanne, an HPD retired officer, and their child.
“HPD Sergeant Michael Vance has been with HPD for 20 years. He is in stable condition at Memorial Hermann Hospital. We are lifting the Vance family and praying for a speedy recovery.
“I thank the Houston Fire Department for responding quickly to this morning’s incident and Memorial Hermann Hospital staff for providing critical care.
“Our City lost one of its very best today. We will never forget Senior Officer Jeffrey’s service and sacrifice. I ask Houstonians to continue praying for the Jeffery family and the full recovery of Sergeant Vance.”
Funeral arrangements for fallen SPO Jeffery are pending and will be announced at a later time.
