Mayor Sylvester Turner Remembers Baseball Great Bob Watson

Please attribute the following statement to Mayor Sylvester Turner.

“I am saddened by the passing of baseball legend, Bob Watson. Watson was a pioneer who left his mark on baseball and touched countless lives with his work on and off the field. The former Astros All-Star and General Manager was a role model to the players and a champion for those who aspired to serve in Major League Baseball’s front offices.

“He was a fantastic ambassador for baseball, but more importantly, he was an incredible person and a gentleman.

“Earlier this year, MLB and the Astros Foundation celebrated the grand opening of the Bob Watson Education Center at the Youth Academy in Acres Home. It was a fitting tribute because he was an iconic figure and an enthusiastic supporter. Throughout his life, Watson was devoted to baseball and had a passion for working with young athletes.

“I am honored that Bob Watson’s legacy will live on at Sylvester Turner Park, where the Education Center is located. In his memory, it will continue to serve over 10 thousand youth annually, providing year-round, free instruction and free league play.”
