Mayor Sylvester Turner today issued the following statement in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling that protects LGBTQ workers from discrimination.
“Today is an important day for our nation and the city of Houston. No one should experience discrimination because of who they are or who they love.
“In a significant victory for LGBTQ rights, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that Title VII of the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964 applies to gay and transgender workers. This legal milestone prohibits employers from discriminating against workers based on sexual orientation or gender identity, and it is long overdue. Today, the Supreme Court has affirmed the essential employment rights of all Americans.
“The city of Houston is diverse and inclusive. We are proud to be a city that believes in workplace equality and opportunity for LGBTQ citizens. As of today, those opportunities are guaranteed to all, and America is one step closer to fulfilling the promise of one of its guiding principles; equal justice under law.”
