Mayor Sylvester Turner today attended Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s bill signing ceremony to recognize the new University of Houston College of Medicine. The following is the mayor’s statement congratulating UH.
“The University of Houston proves once again why it is one of the nation’s innovative universities. Today’s bill signing to create the University of Houston medical school is a significant milestone for the Tier One university and will have implications far beyond campus.
“The UH medical school graduates will help meet the demand for primary care physicians who are prepared to serve the state’s diverse population. The creation of a new medical school comes at a critical when Texans are living longer and need more preventative healthcare.
“I thank Gov. Abbott for his support and congratulate Chairman Tilman J. Fertitta and Chancellor Renu Khator for their leadership to establish the first medical school in the City in nearly a half-century.
“As Houston’s mayor and a proud UH graduate, I look forward to watching the development of the medical school’s cutting edge programs and contributions to our community.”
