Investigation into Shooting of Armed Suspect at 14874 Estrellita

Houston police are investigating an incident in which an armed suspect was wounded by HPD officers at 14874 Estrellita at about 12:30 p.m. on Thursday (April 27).

The male suspect, 36, was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

HPD Officers J. Perez and L. Castillo, who discharged their duty weapons, were not injured in this incident.  Officers Perez and Castillo are assigned to the North Division and were sworn in as officers in January 2017 and June 2014, respectively.

HPD Homicide Division Officers G. Potter and N. Krupa reported:

Officers Perez, Castillo and a third officer responded to a burglary of a residence at the above address and upon arrival, encountered the suspect, armed with a machete, chasing the resident in front of his home.  The officers ordered the suspect to drop the weapon multiple times, but instead, he approached them with the weapon in his hand.  As the officers attempted to back away from him,.the suspect raised the weapon in a threatening manner and continued to advance toward them.  Fearing for their safety, Officers Perez and Castillo discharged their duty weapons striking the suspect.  The suspect was then transported by HFD paramedics to the hospital.

As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions, as well as the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
