Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of a suspect by a Memorial Villages Police Department officer at 929 Gessner Road about 9:40 p.m. on Wednesday (July 1).
The identity of the suspect, 23, is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
The Memorial Villages PD officer who discharged her duty weapon was not injured.
HPD Special Investigations Unit Sergeant R. Bass and Officers L. Lopez, S. Martinez, J. Hartnett and M. Millington reported:
A Memorial Villages police officer was exiting the hospital at the above address with a male prisoner (suspect) transported to the hospital due to an earlier altercation with law enforcement. As the officer attempted to secure the suspect in her patrol vehicle, the male evaded arrest on foot. The officer pursued the male and advised of the fleeing suspect via her police radio. After a short foot pursuit, the officer located the suspect hiding in bushes near a parking garage on the property. As the officer attempted to apprehend the suspect, she realized he had managed to remove one of his handcuffs. During the ensuing physical altercation, the suspect attempted to gain possession of the officer’s gun. The officer feared for her safety and discharged her firearm two times, striking the suspect. Shortly thereafter, medical staff moved the male into the hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.
As is customary when a law enforcement officer discharges a weapon in the city limits, the incident is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
