Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of an armed robbery suspect by a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper at 7300 Antoine Drive about 7:30 p.m. on Friday (December 11).
The suspect, Charles E. Jones (b/m, 36), was pronounced dead at the scene.
The DPS trooper who discharged his duty weapon was not injured in this incident.
HPD Special Investigations Unit Sergeant J. Hekimian and Detectives J. Hartnett, N. Arellano, S. Martinez and M. Millington reported:
DPS troopers were conducting a joint investigation with Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies into the robberies of Boost Mobile stores. As part of their investigation, they observed a robbery in progress of one of the stores. Law enforcement followed the suspect (Jones) from the store and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. As they attempted to stop Jones, he produced a firearm and a DPS trooper discharged his rifle multiple times, striking Jones.
As is customary in officer-involved shooting incidents in the Houston city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. It is also being investigated by the Texas Department of Public Safety Texas Ranger Division.
