Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of an armed suspect at 171 North Sam Houston Parkway East about 11:45 a.m. on Thursday (November 11).
The identity of the suspect, 42, is pending verification and notification to family members by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences. HPD Senior Police Officers C. Dexter and R. Gonzalez, who discharged their duty weapons, were not injured during this incident. Officer Dexter was sworn in as an HPD officer in October 2008 and Officer Gonzalez was sworn in as an HPD officer in April 2009. Both are assigned to the HPD Tactical Operations Division. Two Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office deputies also discharged their duty weapons and were not injured. HPD Special Investigations Unit Sergeant R. Flores and Detectives J. Turner, R. Andersen and A. Hurtado reported: Harris County Precinct 4 deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a shooting suspect near the intersection of Holcombe Boulevard and Cambridge Street. The suspect refused to stop and a pursuit ensued. The suspect drove several miles, eventually arriving at a parking lot at the above address. After driving around the parking lot several times, HPD SWAT Officers Dexter and Gonzalez performed a vehicle maneuver and boxed in the suspect vehicle. The suspect then exited his vehicle with a weapon, pointed it at officers, and discharged the weapon at them. Fearing for their lives, Officers Dexter and Gonzalez and Harris County Precinct 4 deputies discharged their duty weapons at the suspect, striking him. HPD SWAT officers then rendered medical aid to the suspect, who was pronounced deceased at the scene by paramedics. As is customary in officer-involved shooting incidents within the Houston city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit, the HPD Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
