Houston police are investigating an incident in which HPD officers discharged their duty weapons at an armed suspect at 5801 North Houston Rosslyn about 8 p.m. last Friday (Oct. 20).
The suspect, Jorge Cabrera, 54, was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
HPD officers M. Daily, J. Hewgley, O. Lozano and E. Reyes, who discharged their duty weapons, were not injured in the incident. Officers Daily, Hewgley, Lozano and Reyes were sworn in as officers in January 2017, April 2016, April 2009 and May 2017, respectively. All four officers are assigned to the North Patrol Division.
HPD Special Investigative Unit Sergeant H. Ruiz, Senior Police Officers J. Barnes, R. Gonzalez, and Officer M. Glover reported:
Officers responded to a cutting-in-progress call at the above address where Cabrera, armed with a long kitchen knife, told them he had just killed his wife. Officers repeatedly gave Cabrera verbal commands in English and Spanish to put down the weapon. He ignored those commands and instead lunged at the officers, who, fearing for their safety discharged their duty weapons, striking him. Cabrera was transported by Houston Fire Department paramedics to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
When officers entered the apartment, they found a female, approximately 57, deceased with multiple stab wounds. Her identity is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
As is customary when an HPD officer discharges his duty weapon in the city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit and the HPD Internal Affairs Division as well as the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
