HPD Special Investigations Unit Detectives M. Estep and V. Lewis reported:
Westside patrol officers initiated a traffic stop on a stolen vehicle in the 300 block of Jensen Drive. The driver failed to stop and a pursuit began. The vehicle came to a stop at the above address and all four occupants (suspects) fled on foot and into a nearby bayou. Two of the four suspects turned around and were immediately taken into custody. The third suspect turned around and needed assistance getting out of the water. The fourth suspect went under water and did not resurface.
The HPD Dive Team was called out to search for the fourth individual and he was later located about 5:50 a.m. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The third suspect consumed a large amount of bayou water and was transported to the hospital by responding Houston Fire Department paramedics. He will also face charges for attempting to flee from police.
As is customary when a person dies in the presence of HPD officers, this case is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit, the Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
