Houston police are investigating an incident that occurred at 100 East 10th Street about 6:20 p.m. on Sunday (July 28) in which a suspect died after being taken into HPD custody.
The male suspect, 35 to 40 years old, was transported to Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital where he was pronounced dead. His identity and cause of death are pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
HPD Special Investigations Unit Detectives R. Lujan and I. Ulloa reported:
As part of an auto theft investigation, HPD patrol officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a white Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck towing a trailer. The driver fled at a high rate of speed, stopped the vehicle and fled on foot, jumping nearby fences.
An officer located the suspect, detained him and escorted him back to the scene. As the suspect appeared to be out of breath and tired from fleeing on foot, officers placed him in the back of a patrol car and called for Houston Fire Department paramedics to evaluate him. Upon arrival, paramedics began evaluating the suspect, removed him from the patrol car and began to administer CPR.
Following transport to the hospital by paramedics, the suspect was pronounced deceased.
Two other suspects believed to be involved in the auto theft were arrested and charged with felony theft.
As is customary when a suspect dies in the presence of police officers in the city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit and the Internal Affairs Division.
