Houston police are investigating an incident in which shots were fired at an off-duty HPD officer at 20200 Katy Freeway (West Interstate Highway 10) about 11:35 p.m. on Saturday (December 19).
Officer J. Pavlica, who discharged his weapon, was not injured in the incident. Officer Pavlica was sworn in as an officer in December 2014 and is assigned to the North Patrol Division.
HPD Special Investigations Unit Sergeant J. Hekimian and Detectives V. Nguyen and N. Arellano reported:
Officer Pavlica was off-duty and in his police uniform while driving on the Katy Freeway near the above address when he observed shots being fired from a vehicle at a dark-colored sedan. The officer maintained distance, called 9-1-1 to provide a description of the suspect vehicle and noticed the black sedan exiting the freeway. The suspect vehicle then began to close the distance between them and the officer’s vehicle.
The suspect(s) then fired multiple rounds at the officer’s vehicle and struck the vehicle’s front end. Fearing for his life, the officer discharged his weapon, but it has not been determined if the suspect vehicle was struck. There are no reports of injuries at this time.
Anyone with information in this case is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division Special Investigations Unit at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents in the Houston city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit and the Internal Affairs Division.
