Investigation into Fatal Shooting of Armed Suspect at 6300 Southwest Freeway

Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of an armed suspect by HPD officers at 6300 Southwest Freeway (South U. S. Highway 59) about 4:30 p.m. on Monday (Oct. 28).

The identity of the deceased suspect is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

No other persons were injured.

Detectives with the HPD Special Investigations Unit reported:

HPD patrol officers responded to a report of a kidnapping about 3:40 p.m. Responding officers were given the suspect vehicle description and short time later, officers identified a vehicle that matched the description.  Officers then attempted to initiate a traffic stop.  The driver briefly stopped, discharged a firearm at the officers twice within a short period of time and then fled the scene in the vehicle.

A short, low-speed pursuit ensued and officers then performed a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver and were able to disable the suspect’s vehicle.  Officers then attempted to conduct a felony stop and approached the suspect’s vehicle. As officers approached the armed suspect, in fear of their safety and the safety of the hostages, they discharged their weapons.

The suspect was struck and responding Houston Fire Department personnel pronounced the suspect deceased at the scene.

An adult female and child were safely removed from the suspect’s vehicle.

As is customary in officer-involved shootings, this incident is being investigated by the HPD Homicide Division Special Investigations Unit and Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
