Houston police are investigating the death of a male and the fatal shooting of another male, who was armed, by Houston police officers at 8820 Westheimer Road about 11:45 p.m. on Saturday, August 8.
The identities of the male victim and the armed male suspects are pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
HPD Sergeant T. Zhang, Officers J. Maldonado, J. Sanchez, P. Luu and N. Leon all discharged their duty weapons and are assigned to the Midwest Patrol Division. They were sworn in as officers in January 2016, August 2024, August 2021, October 2022 and August 2021, respectively. No officers were injured.
HPD Homicide Division Special Investigations Unit Sergeants M. Glover and E. Wohlgemuth reported:
HPD patrol officers were dispatched to a person down call with an armed suspect in the parking garage at the above address. Uniformed officers arrived and found a male lying on the ground motionless and a male suspect standing over him with weapon.
Officers gave the suspect multiple commands to drop the weapon, but the suspect refused. After multiple attempts to get the suspect to drop the weapon, he raised the weapon to point it at the officers. Officers then discharged their weapons, striking the suspect.
Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced the victim and the suspect deceased at the scene.
As is customary in officer involved shootings, this incident is being investigated by the HPD Homicide Division Special Investigations Unit (SIU), the Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
