Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of an armed suspect by a Liberty County law enforcement officer at 300 Gulfgate Center Mall about 11:15 p.m. on Sunday (Sept. 11).
The identity of the deceased male is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences. The law enforcement officer who discharged his weapon – an investigator in the Liberty County District Attorney’s Office – was not injured. HPD Special Investigations Unit Sergeant M. Glover and Detectives A. Henderson, I. Ulloa and S. Mohajer reported: The off-duty investigator was in uniform and working an extra-employment job at a restaurant at the above address when he and a male patron got into a verbal altercation. The male left the restaurant and returned carrying a tire iron. The male charged toward the investigator while holding the tire iron in a threatening manner. At that time, the investigator discharged his firearm, striking the male, who then ran from the restaurant to the parking lot where he collapsed. Paramedics pronounced the male deceased at the scene. As is customary when a law enforcement officer discharges a weapon in the city limits of Houston, this incident is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
