Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of an armed suspect by Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers at 2615 South Calumet Street about 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday (Sept. 20).
The identity of the male suspect, 26, is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Texas DPS troopers who discharged their weapons were not injured in the incident.
HPD Special Investigations Unit Sergeant B. Smith and Detectives V. Lewis, R, Anderson and M. Estep reported.
A multi-jurisdictional task force comprised of HCSO deputies and Texas DPS troopers located a suspect wanted in a capital murder investigation at a park near the above address. Members of the task force, dressed in identifiable law enforcement uniforms or clothing, approached the suspect and gave verbal commands to surrender. The suspect refused verbal commands and ran north through the park area.
As he ran, the suspect produced a firearm from his waist area and fired his weapon toward the task force members. Task force members returned fire while chasing the suspect on foot. The suspect ran toward the backyard of a residence at the above address and turned toward the members of the task force while still in possession of the weapon. Members of the task force subsequently discharged their weapons, striking the suspect multiple times. Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced him deceased at the scene.
As is customary in law enforcement-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, the case is being investigated by the Special Investigations Unit and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Department of Public Safety will also be conducting their investigations.
