Houston police are investigating the apparent accidental shooting of a juvenile male and the apparent suicide of a man at 6869 Arto Street about 8:20 p.m. on Wednesday (August 7).
The identities of the males, 11 and 17 years of age, are pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
HPD Homicide Division Detectives C. Davidson and A. Finlay reported:
HPD patrol officers responded to a shooting call at an apartment complex at the above address and found Houston Fire Department paramedics providing medical assistance to a juvenile male with a gunshot wound. Paramedics pronounced the juvenile deceased.
Further investigation and witness statements determined the juvenile was at an apartment visiting family members when, at some point, the 17-year-old male, placed a firearm on a bed. A second juvenile family member – a 14-year-old female – picked up the weapon and, believing it to be unloaded, pulled the trigger. The weapon discharged and the 11-year-old was struck by the gunfire. The 14-year-old female was not injured.
The 17-year-old male then ran out of the apartment to a railroad behind the complex, fired multiple shots and then turned the gun on himself. He was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
Anyone with additional information in this case is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600.
