Investigation into Fatal Shooting at 2000 Smith Street

The fatal shooting of a male at 2000 Smith Street about 10 p.m. on Sunday (February 11) will be referred to a Harris County grand jury.

The identity of the deceased male is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

The male shooter, 21, was not injured in the incident.

HPD Homicide Division Detectives G. Zavala and S. Overstreet reported:

HPD patrol officers responded to a shooting call at the above address and learned Houston Fire Department paramedics transported a male with multiple gunshot wounds to Ben Taub General Hospital.  The male was pronounced deceased.  Officers then responded to a 9-1-1 call at a nearby location, where the possible shooter had called to report the incident.  Officers arrived and detained the male and recovered the weapon used in the shooting.

A preliminary investigation determined the male shooter was leaving a restaurant when he saw another male following him.  As he waited at the crosswalk, the male approached him, armed with what he described as an ice pick.  The male with the ice pick then lunged at him.  Believing he was about to be robbed, the male took out his gun and shot the suspect.

The Harris County District Attorney’s Office was contacted and determined the case will be presented to a grand jury for review.
