Houston police are investigating a fatal crash at 9400 Southwest Freeway (South U.S. Highway 59) service road about 3:55 a.m. on Sunday (January 17).
The identity and gender of the victim is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant D. Rose and Officer K. Green reported:
The driver of a silver Honda Accord was traveling behind an HPD patrol vehicle at a high rate of speed southbound near the above address and exited the freeway onto the service road. The officer observed the Honda still traveling at a high rate of speed southbound on the service road and heard a crash.
A preliminary investigation indicated the driver of the Honda lost control on the service road and struck the fence of a car dealership. The Honda then struck at least four vehicles in the parking lot of the dealership and immediately burst into flames. The driver, the only occupant in the vehicle, died at the scene.
The investigation is continuing.
