Investigation into Fatal Crash at 8500 Gulf Freeway

Houston police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash at 8500 Gulf Freeway (South Interstate Highway 45) about 12:05 a.m. on Sunday (March 14).

The identity of the female victim, 42, is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant D. Rose and Officer Z. Radcliffe reported:

A blue Chevrolet Tahoe was traveling at a low rate of speed northbound in the exit lane of the Gulf Freeway, between Monroe and Park Place.  A silver Nissan Sentra was driving northbound in the same lane behind a truck not involved in the crash. The truck in front of the Nissan swerved to avoid hitting the Tahoe.  The driver of the Nissan then saw the Chevrolet and also attempted to swerve; however, the Nissan struck the Chevrolet.

Two persons inside the Chevrolet then fled on foot.  Paramedics were called and pronounced the female passenger in the Nissan deceased at the scene.

A witness stated the occupants who ran from the Chevrolet were intoxicated.  Investigators towed the Chevrolet Tahoe and are processing it for evidence at this time.

The male driver, 33, of the Nissan was transported to a hospital in stable condition.  He did not show signs of intoxication and consented to a blood draw.

Anyone with information on the identities of the driver and passenger of the Chevrolet Tahoe is urged to contact the HPD Hit and Run Unit at 713-247-4072 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
