The identity of the male victim, 33, is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant V. Harisis and Officer T. Riley reported:
HPD North Patrol Division officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a tan Toyota Corolla traveling at a high rate of speed and without headlights on in the area of Parker Road and the Hardy Toll Road. The driver refused to stop and officers initiated a vehicle pursuit.
The driver swerved out of his lane in the 6500 block of Parker and struck a concrete guardrail on the right side of a bridge. The vehicle went over the guardrail, burst into flames and landed in the bayou below. The driver was pronounced deceased at the scene. The HPD Dive Team responded to the scene to recover the vehicle from the bayou.
As is customary in incidents involving the death of a suspect in the presence of an HPD officer, this case is also being investigated by the HPD Homicide Division Special Investigations Unit.
