Investigation into Fatal Crash at 5900 Scottcrest Drive

Houston police have learned that a male critically injured in a crash at 5900 Scottcrest Drive about 6:15 p.m. on Saturday (October 14) has died.

The identity of the deceased male, 62, is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant S. Jewell and Officer N. Duval reported:

The male was on a bicycle traveling eastbound in the 3900 block of Old Spanish Trail against a red light.  A red Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck was traveling northbound on Scottcrest and, as he entered the intersection of Old Spanish Trail, struck the bicyclist.

The driver of the pickup truck, identified as John Washington, 66, stopped and remained at the scene.  He was evaluated and determined to be impaired.  Washington was charged with driving while intoxicated in Harris County Criminal Court #7 and booked into the Harris County Jail.  Washington’s booking photo is attached to this news release.

Houston Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene and transported the male to Ben Taub General Hospital, where doctors pronounced him deceased on Monday (October 16).

A preliminary investigation and witness statements indicated the pickup truck had the green light at the intersection.

The investigation is continuing.
