Investigation into Fatal Crash at 5900 Katy Freeway

Houston police are investigating a fatal crash at 5900 Katy Freeway about 1:05 p.m. on Monday (February 26).

The identity of the deceased male,16, is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant L. Le and Officer C. Vargas reported:

A white Ford Ranger pickup truck was traveling eastbound on the Katy Freeway and was stopped on the freeway main lanes.  A white Ford Transit 350 Van was also traveling eastbound on the Katy Freeway, made a lane change and struck the rear of the pickup truck.

The male driver of the pickup was transported to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center where he was later pronounced deceased.  Three juvenile female passengers in the pickup, 16, were transported to area hospitals in stable conditions.

A preliminary investigation and statements from one of the females determined the driver had stopped the truck because something fell from it and he got out to put it back in place.  The truck was struck as they were about to drive away.

The driver of the van remained at the scene and was determined not to be impaired.

No charges have been filed as the investigation is continuing.
