Investigation into Fatal Crash at 5400 West Sam Houston Parkway South

Houston police are investigating a fatal crash at 5400 West Sam Houston Parkway South service road about 2:35 a.m. today (August 9).

The identity of the deceased female is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant E. Fendia and Officer R. Singleton reported:

HPD patrol officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a black Honda Pilot traveling northbound n the 900 block of the West Sam Houston Parkway service road for suspicion of driving while intoxicated.  The Pilot initially slowed down for officers, but then accelerated and began to evade police at a high rate of speed.

The suspect fled northbound on the West Sam Houston Parkway, took the Gessner Road exit and made a U-turn at Little York Road.  The Pilot then fled southbound and got on the Sam Houston Parkway main lanes near Hammerly Boulevard.  Officers pursued the Pilot, which then took the Bellaire exit at a high rate of speed.  The suspect lost control of the vehicle on the service road and rolled over.  The female passenger was ejected from the vehicle.

Houston Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene and pronounced the female deceased.  The male driver, 32,was transported to an area hospital in critical condition.  A preliminary investigation indicated the driver exhibited signs of impairment.

The investigation is continuing.
