Houston police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash at 3100 South Loop West (South Interstate Highway 610 West) service road about 12:45 a.m. today (Aug. 21).
The identity of the deceased male victim is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences. HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant D. Rose and Officer T. Syed reported: The victim was sleeping under the freeway overpass at the above address when he was struck by a red Ford pickup truck whose driver was fleeing the scene of a separate crash in which the truck rear-ended a white Toyota Highlander as it was stopped at the light on the service road at South Main Street. Following the initial crash, the pickup truck jumped the curb and drove under the overpass between the support pillars and the incline. There, the driver of the truck struck the victim, a concrete pillar, a tree and then fled the scene traveling eastbound on the service road. Paramedics transported the victim to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased. A female passenger, 50, in the Toyota reported an injury, but refused treatment and transport to a hospital. At this time, there is no description of the suspect driver who failed to stop and render aid. Anyone with information on the identity of the wanted driver or the red Ford pickup truck (with heavy damage) is urged to contact the HPD Hit and Run Unit at 713-247-4072 or speak anonymously with Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
