Houston police are investigating the fatal crash that occurred at 23800 Eastex Freeway (North Interstate Highway 69) about 7:05 p.m. on Sunday (February 20).
The identity of the female victim, 42, is pending notification to family members by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant G. Clark and Officer K. Stout reported:
The victim was driving a maroon Honda Civic southbound on the Eastex Freeway between Northpark Drive and Kingwood Drive when it was struck from behind by a vehicle of unknown make and model. The unknown vehicle then fled the scene.
The victim stopped her Civic in a moving lane of traffic and exited her vehicle to check on her children in the back seat. While the female was standing on the freeway, a white Chevrolet Sierra pickup truck, traveling in the same lane as the victim’s Honda Civic, swerved to avoid hitting the Civic, but struck the victim. The driver of the white Sierra came to a stop a short distance away from the crash and waited for police. Another vehicle, a red Chevrolet Sierra, was also traveling in the same lane and struck the rear of the Civic, but only caused minor damage as the driver was able to slow down.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The children in the back seat were not injured and were released to family members at the scene.
The drivers of both Sierras remained at the scene, were questioned and released. Neither showed signs of intoxication.
The investigation is continuing.
