Houston police are investigating a fatal crash at 1600 Southwest Freeway (South U.S. Highway 59) about 2:50 a.m. on Sunday (June 4).
The identity of the deceased male, 44, is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences. HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant M. Sudduth and Officer F. Flynn reported: A METRO police officer observed a gray Dodge Charger engulfed in flames in the northbound lanes of the freeway at the above address. HFD firefighters arrived and extinguished the fire. The male driver was located inside the vehicle and was pronounced deceased at the scene. No other occupants were in the vehicle. A preliminary investigation indicated the male was driving the wrong way – southbound in the northbound lanes of the freeway – when his vehicle struck a concrete barrier and then caught fire.
