HFD Extinguishing Fire at Keith Weiss Park

The Houston Fire Department’s Wildland Division is working to extinguish a wildfire at Keith Weiss Park (12300 Aldine Westfield Rd, 77093).

Around 9 a.m. Friday, HFD responded to reports of woods on fire at the park. Upon arrival, our Wildland division was notified, and has established a unified command including Houston Parks and Recreation Department (HPARD) and Houston Health Department (HHD).

As of 2:30 p.m., the fire was contained to approximately less than 5 acres and not expected to spread given current weather conditions. No injuries have been reported, and HHD was conducting air quality monitoring in the area. Keith Weiss Park will remain closed until it is released by HFD.

“With dangerous fire weather we’re currently experiencing, it’s important that we are careful in safely mitigating the risk from dead vegetation,” said Fire Chief Thomas Muñoz. “Our Wildland division is skilled in this type of work and will provide world-class service to encourage a healthy recovery for our beloved park spaces.”

Urban parks present unique concerns for residents who live nearby. HFD coordinates with HPARD’s Natural Resources division to ensure the safety of the Wildland where it intersects with the communities.
