HOUSTON, Texas – The Houston Health Department and Houston Office of Emergency Management will offer information about heat safety and other emergency preparedness topics at an upcoming Charity Productions community event.
Summer Heat and Emergency Preparedness will take place Monday, July 23 from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Northeast Multi-Service Center, located at 9720 Spaulding Street in Houston. Anyone is welcome to attend.
“With the hottest part of the summer upon us and another hurricane season quickly approaching, this opportunity to leverage the reach of Charity Productions comes at a great time,” said John Fleming, Houston Health Department Public Health Preparedness Bureau Chief.
The Houston Health Department will offer information about preventing and recognizing symptoms of heat-related illness, the city’s heat emergency plan, cooling center, mosquito prevention and other public health topics.
Hurricane preparedness and the State of Texas Emergency Assistance Registry (STEAR) will be the focus of the Houston Office of Emergency Management portion of the event. The office will also highlight the Run, Hide, Fight active shooter response campaign.
METRO will also participate in the event, educating attendees about the Authority’s services and how to register for METRO Service Alerts which provide real-time information ranging from route schedule changes to emergencies. The agency plays a key role during severe weather events, including heat advisories, in which it coordinates with the City of Houston to provide free rides to designated cooling centers.
“We look forward to the Houston Health Department, Houston Office of Emergency Management and METRO joining us for this important community meeting,” said Charles X White, Charity Productions Executive Director. “Educational opportunities like Summer Safety and Preparedness are at the core of what Charity Productions is all about.”
Charity Productions will close the event with a review of Emergency Support Function 14 (ESF-14), long-term community recover and mitigation.
