Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in a fatal crash at 900 Little York Road about 2:10 a.m. today (April 24).
The suspect, Ruben Garcia (H/m, 21), is charged with one count of intoxication manslaughter and two counts of intoxicated assault in the 174th State District Court.
A photo of Garcia, who remains hospitalized at Ben Taub General Hospital, is not available at this time.
The male victim was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant J. Roque and Officer A. Mares reported:
According to witnesses, Garcia was driving a black Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck eastbound on Little York at a high rate of speed and ran the red light at the intersection of the East Hardy Toll Road service road. The pickup struck a blue Volkswagon Passat traveling northbound on Hardy and attempting to make a left turn onto Little York. The pickup truck then lost control and struck a guardrail just east of the intersection. Garcia was transported to the hospital. The male passenger in the Chevrolet died at the scene. Two female passengers in the Volkswagon were transported to Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital in unknown conditions. The driver of the Passat was transported to Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Evidence from the scene determined Garcia was impaired at the time of the crash and he was subsequently charged.
