Houston police are investigating an incident in which an armed suspect was wounded by two HPD officers at 5104 Almeda Road about 2:10 a.m. on Wednesday (May 17).
The male suspect, 31, was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital where he remains in critical but stable condition.
HPD Officers N. Jones and A. Ruben, who discharged their duty weapons, were not injured in the incident. Officers Jones and Ruben are assigned to the Northeast Patrol Division and were sworn in as officers in November 2008 and September 2011, respectively.
HPD Homicide Division Officer A. August reported:
Officers Jones and Ruben, off-duty and in full uniform, were working an approved extra job at a night club at the above address when they were told of a disturbance in the parking lot. As officers went to investigate, they saw a male suspect walking toward them with an assault rifle. Officers gave the suspect repeated verbal commands to drop the weapon, which he ignored. The suspect instead raised the rifle and pointed it at the officers. Fearing for their lives, Officers Jones and Ruben discharged their duty weapons, striking the suspect. He was transported by HFD paramedics to the hospital.
As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions, as well as the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
