CAUSE: Unintentional.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Firefighters arrived on scene within three minutes to find smoke coming from the ridge vent of an apartment building. They found an extinguished kitchen fire in a unit, with the wall behind a stove burned, extending to the vent hood and cabinets. Crews removed the cabinet doors and ceiling to find and extinguish embers. They saturated the area and ensured there was no extension. Firefighters cleared the smoke from the unit and conducted salvage and overhaul. The resident had been cooking with oil when a flash fire occurred. He was able to use a neighbor’s extinguisher to control and mostly extinguish the fire on the stove prior to HFDs arrival. Crews from Stations 28, 51, 60 and 2 responded to this incident.
