Annual Red Ribbon Rally Seeks to Prevent Opioid/Prescription Drug Abuse Among Houston Area Students

HOUSTON – As part of the City’s annual observance of Drug Prevention Month, Houston area middle school students will attend a special day-long rally featuring presentations on alcohol and drug abuse as well as gang prevention.

As America battles the opioid crisis, research shows that an alarming number of middle school-aged students experiment with their family member’s prescription medications. This year’s Red Ribbon Rally will address many of the common pressures these kids face on a daily basis.

The Rally will take place on the steps of City Hall, October 20, 2017 at 8:00am, featuring several school talents, including; the Summerwood Elementary Choir, High School for Law Enforcement JROTC, and a special presentation: Gangs 101 from the Mayor’s Anti-Gang Office. Students will also conduct their very own student city council session to facilitate a productive discussion about these issues, while also learning how city government works.

Red Ribbon Rally day partners include: Houston Crackdown Division of the Mayor’s Office of Public Safety and Homeland Security, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, U.S. Marshal’s Office, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives, National Screening Center, Federal Bureau of Investigation Houston Field Office, and Radio Station KRBE-FM (Houston/Cumulus media).
