HOUSTON -- Last week, the director of the Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities, Maria Town, conducted a series of workshops on disability competency with the Toyota Center's guest service center and security staff. The purpose of the training was to enhance the Toyota Center's capacity to provide inclusive experiences for all of their guests. Over 600 members of the Toyota Center’s staff attended workshops that included training on disability cultural competency, accessibility, and service animals with a particular focus in accessibility during large scale events.
“Houston is a city that prides itself on its love and hospitality. We welcome all people and work diligently to shape an enjoyable experience for all of our guests. Regardless of your age or ability, in Houston we are working to make sure you have a good time,” said, Mayor Sylvester Turner.
Houston is home to one of the largest disability and aging populations in the country. These populations will continue to grow as individuals live longer. As an inclusive city it is the responsibility of local government to ensure that all Houstonians enjoy their experience at our many sports facilities.
The city of Houston has submitted a bid to host the 2020 Democratic National Convention. The Toyota Center and the expanded George R. Brown Convention Center in the Avenida Houston convention campus would provide the main gathering spaces for the July 13-16, 2020 convention should Houston's bid be accepted.
