Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of an armed male suspect by Houston police officers that occurred at 9619 Yupondale Drive about 9:50 p.m. on Monday (Sept. 28).
The identity of the deceased male suspect is pending notification to family members by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
HPD Officers R. Schultz and M. Washington discharged their duty weapons. Officer Schultz was sworn in as an officer in November 2020 and is assigned to the Gang Division. Officer M. Washington was sworn in as an officer in August 2020 and is assigned to the Operational Support Division, K-9 Unit.
HPD Homicide Division Special Investigations Unit Detectives A. Henderson and J. Windham reported:
HPD Gang Division’s Crime Reduction Unit and a K-9 Unit were executing a felony warrant when they discovered the wanted suspect inside the building, Upon entering the building. officers located the suspect hiding in a back room.
Officers gave the suspect verbal commands, but the suspect refused to comply. The HPD K-9 officer then deployed the K-9. The suspect was observed armed with a large knife, swinging it and attempting to stab the K-9. Officers discharged their weapons, striking the suspect.
Officers immediately began rendering aid until Houston Fire Department paramedics arrived. The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene. No officers were injured.
As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents in the Houston city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit, the Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
