Houston police are investigating a fatal crash at 10500 Katy Freeway (West Interstate Highway 10) about 8:20 p.m. on Wednesday (October 16).
The identity of the deceased male, 41, is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant D. Griffiths and Officer D. Hoang reported:
A male pedestrian was seen standing on the crash guard of the freeway near the exit to Gessner Road. The pedestrian then jumped down and into the roadway. At that time, the driver of a gray GMC Yukon traveling eastbound on the freeway attempted to veer to the right shoulder to avoid striking the pedestrian, but was unable to do so. The GMC then struck the pedestrian.
Houston Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene and pronounced the pedestrian deceased. The male driver of the GMC, identified as George McDowell, 60, remained at the scene and was determined to be impaired. McDowell was charged with misdemeanor driving while intoxicated in Harris County Criminal Court #8.
