Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of an armed suspect by two HPD officers at 4923 Shadowdale Drive about 4:30 p.m. on Monday (April 1).
The identity of the male, 44, is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
Senior Police Officer J. Compean and Officer J. Walsh discharged their weapons in the incident. They were sworn in as HPD officers in April 2009 and April 2015, respectively. Both officers are assigned to the Major Offenders Division.
HPD Special Investigations Unit Sergeant M. Ynosencio and Detectives T. Vaca, J. Kosler, V. Praxedes and O. Flores reported:
Officers assigned to the Major Offenders Division – Fugitive Apprehension Team executed a felony aggravated assault warrant at the above address. Officers researched the wanted person and found the location to be his primary residence. Officers were conducting surveillance at the location when patrol officers responded to a call for service at the same residence regarding the suspect who earlier had exposed himself to neighbors.
Officers attempted to contact the suspect numerous times verbally, by announcing “police,” and audibly by utilizing police vehicle sirens. Officers were unable to contact the suspect at the front door and moved to the back door of the residence. At the back door, officers announced “police” and knocked several times before gaining entry into the residence. Upon entry, officers located the suspect in his bedroom, lying in bed. Officers began giving verbal commands for the suspect to get up, show his hands, and exit the bedroom. The suspect initially complied with officers’ commands and began walking towards them with his hands raised, but then stopped, ran back to the bedroom behind a door and produced a gun. The suspect pointed the gun at officers and two officers discharged their duty weapons at the suspect. Paramedics were called and pronounced the suspect deceased at the scene.
As is customary in officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, the case is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit, Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
