Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in the death of an infant at 12300 Almeda Road about 5:05 p.m. on Tuesday (December 19).
The suspect, Charles A. Washington, 28, is charged with manslaughter and attempt to take a weapon from a police officer in the 263rd State District Court. A booking photo of Washington is attached to this news release.
The identity of the male victim, nine months old, is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
HPD Homicide Division Sergeant N. Lazo and Detective M. Providence reported:
HPD patrol officers responded to a major crash at the above address and discovered an apparent crash involving an Infiniti SUV and at least two other vehicles. An infant passenger in the SUV was found unresponsive and transported by Houston Fire Department paramedics to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
As officers attempted to detain the male driver of the Infiniti, he became aggressive and lunged at officers. Officers managed to detain the male and he was transported to an area hospital for evaluation.
Two juvenile passengers – female,13, and male, 8 – in the SUV were transported to an area hospital to be treated for their injuries.
Homicide detectives learned the male driver, later identified as Washington, was driving an Infiniti SUV at a high rate of speed on Almeda Road and struck at least two vehicles before coming to a stop.
Washington was subsequently charged for his role in the incident and booked into the Harris County Jail.
