HOUSTON- The City of Houston and community partners invite Houstonians to participate in the 9th Annual Houston Citizenship Month, a celebration of “the many faces of Houston” and what it means to be a good citizen.
Observed every year during November, the celebration features a series of free programs and activities that highlight Houston’s rich cultural diversity, promote cross-cultural understanding, and encourage residents to play an active role in the civic affairs of the city.
This year, the celebration will highlight the heroic actions and generous deeds of Hurricane Harvey responders who answered the call to help storm victims during the most challenging disaster in Houston’s history. City and county emergency responders, civic leaders, community organizations and private citizens came together in the hour of need to help their neighbors begin the path to recovery. Citizenship Month will honor the many individuals whose caring actions demonstrate the core value of good citizenship.
Events scheduled for the month include a reception in honor of Hurricane Harvey responders, disaster preparedness workshops hosted at various Houston Public Library branches, and programs and activities designed to bring people together to celebrate the city’s diverse heritages and build community unity and pride.
Citizenship Month will be formally recognized at a U.S. Naturalization Ceremony, featuring comments by Houston’s First Daughter Ashley Turner, on November 15 at the M.O. Campbell Educational Center.
Citizenship Month is an initiative of the Department of Neighborhoods Office of New Americans and Immigrant Communities. The celebration is organized in collaboration with members of the city’s Citizenship Month Advisory Committee and community partners.
