UPDATE: Suspect Arrested, Charged in March Fatal Shooting at 8100 Long Point Road

Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in the fatal shooting of a male at 8100 Long Point Road about 10:50 p.m. on March 8.

The suspect, Cedric La Shawn Smith, 45, is charged with murder in the 174th State District Court. A booking photo of Smith is attached to this news release.

The victim is identified as Porfirio De Jesus Sampayo, 32.

HPD Homicide Division Detectives W. Huff and J. Nguyen reported:

Officers were dispatched to a crash at the above address and observed a truck that struck a light pole.  When paramedics checked on the male driver, they noticed he had suffered at least one gunshot wound.  He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Evidence obtained the male was in the parking lot of a post office when he apparently got into a verbal confrontation with another male.  When the victim was leaving in his truck, the male suspect shot him.  The victim, later identified as Mr. Sampayo, drove out of the parking lot, lost control of his vehicle and struck the utility pole.

The unknown suspect was last seen riding a bicycle eastbound on Long Point Road.

Further investigation identified Smith as the suspect in this case.  On Wednesday (August 2), Smith was arrested on prior unrelated charges and booked into the Harris County Jail.  Smith was subsequently charged for his role in Sampayo’s death.
