UPDATE: Suspect Arrested, Charged in Fatal Shooting at 5712 South Gessner Road

Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in the fatal shooting of a woman and the wounding of a man at 5712 South Gessner Road about 6:50 a.m. on Saturday (July 8).

The suspect, Jermaine Torres, 17, is charged with murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in the 230th State District Court.  A booking photo of Torres is attached to this news release.

Torres is accused in the killing of Princess Ortega, 23.

HPD Homicide Division Detectives M. Barrow and J. Caten reported:

HPD patrol officers responded to a report of gunshots near the above address.  The female victim, later identified as Ms. Ortega, was transported by private vehicle to Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital where she was pronounced deceased.  A male victim, 29, was found at the scene with gunshot wounds and transported by Houston Fire Department paramedics to an area hospital in critical condition.

A preliminary investigation determined the shooting was a result of an argument between two groups leaving an after-hours club at the location.  Following the shooting, multiple witnesses and possible suspect(s) fled the scene on foot and in vehicles.

At that time, there was no known suspect description.

Further investigation identified Torres as a suspect in this case and, last Friday (July 14), he was arrested by the HPD Crime Suppression Team.
