Houston police are investigating the apparent suicide of a man at 7444 Canal Street about 7:20 p.m. on Wednesday (June 28).
The identity of the deceased male, 48, is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
HPD Special Investigations Unit Sergeant B. Smith and Detectives V. Lewis, R. Anderson and M. Estep reported:
An HPD patrol officer was flagged down in the area near the above address by a female, who stated her boyfriend shot at her. She was not struck by the gunfire. As officers took the female’s information, she saw her boyfriend driving nearby and notified the officer.
The officer got into his patrol vehicle and followed the boyfriend to a gas station in the 7400 block of Canal Street and requested backup. The boyfriend then exited his vehicle and entered the convenience store.
As officers entered the store to speak with the boyfriend, he produced a weapon, pointed it at his chest and discharged. Officers immediately provided medical assistance until Houston Fire Department paramedics arrived and pronounced the man deceased.
As is customary when an individual dies in the presence of HPD officers, this case is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit, the Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
