The National League of Cities, with the generous support of The Kresge Foundation and in partnership with LinkedIn, will focus on Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner’s Hire Houston Youth program during a visit here Monday, Aug. 14, as part of its “Building Equitable Pathways to Postsecondary and Workforce Success Summer Road Trip” to six U.S. cities.
LinkedIn and the League will visit Houston Independent School District’s Furr High School to meet local students, educators, and Hire Houston Youth participants from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. From 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., a luncheon will be hosted at the Legacy Room in Houston City Hall, 901 Bagby, Houston, Texas 77002 to discuss the youth hiring program’s accomplishments and to share findings from NLC and LinkedIn about Houston’s regional workforce.
“This summer, we were able to find over 5,000 job opportunities for youth between the ages of 16-24 in the City of Houston, and I am confident that we will reach 7,500 jobs next summer,” said Mayor Turner.
By 2020, Hire Houston Youth will offer a city-wide, year-round, youth workforce development program that offers learning, training, experience and resources to successfully navigate the educational, business, and neighborhood systems to empower youth to enter and succeed in Houston’s dynamic economy.
The National League of NLC, through its Institute for Youth, Education, and Families, has been working with a group of cities to solve greater access for all communities to postsecondary education and quality jobs.
The Summer Road Trip include community conversations and research on education, employment and skills trends in Houston; Austin; Corpus Christi, Charleston, South Carolina; Jacksonville, Florida; and Nashville, Tennessee.
