UPDATE: Suspect Arrested, Charged in Shooting at 1900 Dewalt Street

Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in the shooting of a man at 1900 Dewalt Street that occurred about 1:45 a.m. on March 30.  

The suspect, Gayland DeAnthony Berry (b/m, 23), is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in the 338th State District Court. A booking photo of Berry is attached to this news release.

He is accused in the shooting of  Margarito Lopez (w/m, 32) who was transported to an area hospital in stable condition.

HPD Major Assaults & Family Violence Division Sergeant V. Garcia reported:

Officers responded to a report of a man shot at the above address and found Mr. Lopez had crashed his car into a ditch on the right hand side of the street.  According to Lopez he had pulled out in front of a dark-colored sedan traveling southbound on Dewalt.  As he pulled in front of the car, someone inside the car began shooting at him.  Lopez felt himself get shot in the neck and then lost control of his car.  The suspect’s vehicle then turned eastbound and fled the area.

Further investigation identified Berry as the suspect in this case.  He was taken into custody on Wednesday (August 11) and subsequently charged for his role in the shooting.
