UPDATE: Suspect Arrested, Charged in November 2020 Fatal Shooting at 9797 North Freeway

Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in the fatal shooting of one man and the wounding of another at 9797 North Freeway (North Interstate Highway 45) service road about 8:45 p.m. on Nov. 21, 2020.

The suspect, Derrick Thompson (b/m, 41), is charged with murder in the 232nd State District Court.  He is accused in the death of Gary James Rogers, 55, and the wounding of Sean Coats, 35.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeants R. Watson, E. Attebury and Detectives K. Collier and J. Stroble reported:

Officers were called to a hotel at the above address and were advised one man, later identified as Mr. Rogers, had suffered multiple gunshot wounds.  He was pronounced deceased at the scene by Houston Fire Department paramedics.  A second man, identified as Mr. Coats, was also shot in the torso and leg and transported to the hospital.

At that time, there were no known witnesses or suspects in the shooting.

Further investigation identified Thompson as the suspect in this case.  Thompson was arrested last Friday (July 2) by officers with the HPD North Patrol Division Crime Suppression Team.  He was subsequently charged for his role in the shooting.
