Mayor Sylvester Turner visited one of several Hurricane Laura donation sites Thursday to thank people who were dropping off supplies and to encourage Houstonians to help survivors recover from extensive damage caused by the category 4 storm.

The mayor was joined by Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale of Gallery Furniture, Joe Kelley President of Kroger – Houston Division, DeAndre Sam – President/CEO – A-Rocket Moving & Storage, the Relief Gang, members of the Mayor’s Health Equity Response (H.E.R) Task Force, and other sponsors and volunteers.

Volunteers are collecting recovery supplies for the Houston “Paying it Forward” donation drive to assist people in Port Arthur, Orange, and Beaumont, Texas, and Sulphur and Lake Charles, Louisiana. Volunteers have already packaged and shipped some donated items and distributed packages to residents.

“I received a call from the mayor of Lake Charles thanking me for what the City of Houston is doing to help,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner. “I told him we are all in this together. After Hurricane Harvey, people around the nation helped Houston, and now Houston is paying it forward.”

The relief effort will accept donations through Thursday, September 10. People can drop-off donations at the George R. Brown Convention Center (except Labor Day) and Gallery Furniture from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. All Kroger Stores also have collection boxes at each of its locations.
